Coinbase Australia adds SMSF crypto support after AFSL

Coinbase Australia launched SMSF support after securing an Australian Financial Services Licence, offering dedicated trading accounts, audit-ready transaction downloads and faster verification.

Coinbase Australia has launched support for self-managed super funds, enabling trustees to open dedicated crypto trading accounts, download audit-ready transaction data and use a streamlined entity verification process. The features follow the firm's receipt of an Australian Financial Services Licence last month.

Eligible SMSF trustees can create separate exchange accounts for their funds and export transaction records formatted to meet Australian accounting and auditing requirements. Coinbase says the verification flow is designed for Australian fund structures to simplify onboarding for trustees and administrators.

The announcement appeared in a Monday blog post from Coinbase's Asia-Pacific team. John O'Loghlen, Coinbase APAC managing director, commented: “With growing regulatory clarity in Australia and institutional adoption of digital assets, we see SMSFs as a core area of potential growth in Australia. By combining security, simplicity, and global best practices, we're helping Australians include crypto in their retirement strategy with total confidence.” Pete Patanapanlert, an executive at Coinbase, was also listed as an author of the post.

Coinbase obtained its Australian Financial Services Licence last month and said it will introduce crypto and equity perpetuals for Australian investors first, followed by futures and options.

Self-managed super funds are private retirement vehicles regulated by the Australian Taxation Office that let trustees directly manage investments such as shares, property and cryptocurrencies. Official figures show at least 664,000 SMSFs at the end of 2025, holding about AU$1.06 trillion (approximately $758.2 billion) in assets.

Other global exchanges have added SMSF features in Australia in the past year. Coinbase described the new tools as intended to align transaction reporting and verification with Australian accounting and taxation standards for trustees and financial advisers managing private superannuation accounts.
