OpenAI acquires TBPN, vows editorial independence

OpenAI on Apr. 2 announced the purchase of LA-based tech talk show TBPN, pledging editorial independence while folding the program into communications and marketing. Terms were not disclosed.

OpenAI on April 2 announced the acquisition of Los Angeles-based technology talk show TBPN, folding the program into its communications and marketing operations while keeping editorial control with the show. Financial terms were not disclosed.

In an internal memo explaining the rationale, chief of strategy Fidji Simo wrote that the company sees a need for “real, constructive conversation” as AI systems become more embedded in society. Under OpenAI’s ownership, TBPN will operate as an independent editorial outlet, while contributing production and storytelling resources to the company’s outreach.

TBPN, a Silicon Valley-focused program hosted by John Coogan and Jordi Hays, streams live for three hours each weekday. The show features interviews with startup founders, venture capitalists, and senior technology executives. Recent guests have included Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, and Sam Altman.

Founded in October 2024 and based in Los Angeles, TBPN began daily livestreaming in March 2025. Each episode draws about 70,000 viewers across platforms including X, YouTube, and Spotify.

Editorial decisions, including coverage and guest bookings, will remain with TBPN’s team, according to OpenAI. Behind the scenes, the program is expected to support communications and marketing work beyond the daily broadcast. Simo cited the show’s brand storytelling experience and close view of industry trends as factors in the deal.

OpenAI characterized the arrangement as a way to engage more directly in public discussion about AI while gaining access to an established media operation with an existing audience and production pipeline. No changes to staffing or programming were announced.

OpenAI did not outline new series or formats under its ownership and indicated that TBPN’s current schedule will continue for now.
