Metaplanet Buys 797 BTC for $94M as Bitcoin Surges Past $120K

Japanese investment firm Metaplanet acquired 797 BTC for $94 million, bringing total holdings to 16,352 BTC as Bitcoin surged past $120K.
Japanese investment firm Metaplanet purchased 797 BTC on July 14, 2025, bringing its total holdings to 16,352 BTC. The company paid an average price of $117,451 per coin, investing roughly $93.6 million in this latest tranche. The acquisition occurred as Bitcoin surged past $120,000 to reach a new all-time high late Sunday night, continuing its recent rally.
Metaplanet currently ranks as the fifth-largest publicly traded corporate Bitcoin holder globally, trailing MicroStrategy, MARA, Twenty One, and Riot Platforms, according to BitcoinTreasuries.net data. The firm has established an ambitious target of accumulating over 210,000 BTC by the end of 2027. At current Bitcoin prices, that position would be worth approximately $23 billion.
Metaplanet transformed from a hotel operator into a Bitcoin treasury company in 2024. CEO Simon Gerovich described the company's acquisition strategy to the Financial Times as part of a “Bitcoin gold rush.” He said the firm plans to use its Bitcoin assets as collateral to acquire cash-generating businesses, particularly in digital financial services.
Metaplanet reported second-quarter revenue of 1.1 billion yen ($7.6 million), marking a 42.4% increase from the same period last year. The revenue growth came largely from the company's Bitcoin-focused operations following its strategic pivot. Metaplanet shares rose 1% to 1,580 yen ($10.70) by midday Monday in Tokyo trading.
Since beginning its Bitcoin treasury strategy in 2024, Metaplanet has funded its purchases through multiple financing methods, including zero-coupon bonds, stock acquisition rights, and planned U.S. capital market offerings. The company has invested approximately $1.64 billion in Bitcoin acquisitions to date across all its purchases since completing its transformation from hotel operations to a Bitcoin treasury company.
