ICE to launch four container freight futures on Apr. 7

ICE plans US dollar-denominated, cash-settled container freight futures on April 7, pending approvals, indexed to NYSHEX and covering lanes linking Asia, Europe and the United States.

Intercontinental Exchange, the owner of the New York Stock Exchange, plans to list four US dollar-denominated, cash-settled container freight futures on April 7, pending regulatory approval. The contracts will trade on ICE and settle against the New York Shipping Exchange (NYSHEX) Freight Indices.

The futures cover routes linking Asia, Europe and the United States, including an Asia–US West Coast lane.

The contracts are structured for financial hedging and do not involve physical delivery. Shippers, carriers and intermediaries can use them to manage exposure to container freight rates.

Each contract settles in cash to published assessments from the NYSHEX Freight Indices, which track prices on core international trade lanes.

Subject to required clearances, the four contracts are scheduled to list on April 7. They will be quoted in US dollars and cleared through ICE’s clearing infrastructure.

Container freight prices have been volatile in recent years, increasing demand for standardized risk management tools. Futures allow companies to offset unfavorable price moves and enable traders to take views on rate direction using an exchange-listed instrument.

ICE operates markets across commodities, interest rates, equities and derivatives.

According to our earlier report, on March 5, 2026 Intercontinental Exchange took a minority stake in OKX at a $25 billion valuation, secured a seat on its board, and said it would license OKX spot prices to design U.S.-regulated crypto futures. The firms outlined plans, pending approvals, to connect ICE’s U.S. futures venues and NYSE tokenized equities markets to OKX’s 120 million accounts, and to assess joint work on market structure, clearing and risk controls, data services, and institutional connectivity. No launch timeline was provided.
