Sui mainnet stalls again within 24 hours

Sui mainnet stalled Friday, failing to produce blocks for nearly two hours in the morning, under 24 hours after a 5-hour, 55-minute outage that halted the network.

Suiscan showed no new blocks for close to two hours when the Sui team posted to X: “Sui mainnet is currently experiencing a network stall. Network activity may be paused at this time.” The team added it was “actively investigating” and that “Updates and incident review will be shared as soon as they are available.” The SUI token traded around $0.90 and was slightly down on the day.

Thursday’s outage lasted 5 hours and 55 minutes and was attributed by the Sui team to a bug in the gas-charging logic introduced with the v1.72 release. A full post-mortem for that incident has not been published, and it was not clear whether Friday’s stall was related to the same bug.

Release notes for v1.72.2 list two major protocol changes. Address Balances shifts away from the UTXO-style model to establish a single canonical balance for each token type to simplify transactions. Gasless Stablecoin Transfers allow supported stablecoins to be sent peer-to-peer without a gas token or gas fees, including support for batched transfers.

Sui’s status page showed at least two-thirds of validators had upgraded to the fix rolled out Thursday, but it had not posted a specific entry about the Friday stall at the time of the report. The network experienced a similar outage in January.

Developers, node operators and investors monitored the status page and explorer metrics for restored block production. The Sui Core team posted that updates and an incident review will be shared when available.
