Publix ends rule blocking reusable produce bags
Publix will allow clean, dry reusable bags for produce and bulk items after reversing a policy that required store-supplied single-use produce bags.
Publix announced it will allow customers to bring clean, dry reusable bags for produce and bulk items, rescinding an in-store policy that had required store-provided single-use produce bags. The change applies to locations across the Southeast and took effect immediately.
Under the prior practice, some stores asked customers to place produce and bulk items into store-supplied disposable bags rather than into reusable bags brought from home. Customers raised concerns in stores and on social media, saying the rule added time to shopping and increased plastic use. Store employees reported frequent questions from shoppers.
The updated guidance permits personal reusable produce bags at checkout if they are clean, dry and meet basic handling requirements. Store associates will continue to package certain items at the register in line with health and safety rules.
Items that require sealed packaging or special handling remain subject to existing rules. Prepared foods, deli items and products sold by weight at self-serve bulk stations will continue to follow local health department requirements and store procedures.
Publix's corporate communications team issued a statement noting the chain reviews store operating procedures and consulted with store managers and associates before issuing the new guidance. Customers with questions were directed to speak with store managers or view the updated policy on the company's website.
A frequent Publix shopper who had raised concerns called the reversal ‘welcome' and added that many customers had been puzzled by the earlier restriction on reusable bags.
Industry observers note grocers have adjusted reusable-bag policies to balance sanitation, labor and sustainability, and public health guidelines and local rules can influence how stores handle loose produce and bulk goods.
