OKX’s X Layer launches Exchange OS for user-created markets

OKX’s EVM-compatible Layer 2, X Layer, launched Exchange OS, which moves matching, margining and settlement on-chain and lets users deploy spot, perpetual and outcome markets.

X Layer, OKX's EVM-compatible Layer 2 blockchain, launched Exchange OS, a protocol upgrade that brings core exchange functions on-chain and lets developers, institutions and other participants create spot, perpetual and outcome markets on the same infrastructure that powers OKX.

Exchange OS shifts matching, margining, liquidation, settlement and risk management into the protocol layer. Market operators can configure trading models, risk controls and compliance parameters without building separate exchange systems.

The upgrade uses an X Layer Improvement Proposal called XIP-Exchange OS to enable permissionless market creation and customization. Developers will be able to propose different market architectures and parameter sets through the XIP process.

Traders will have a unified account and margin system across spot, perpetual and outcome markets on Exchange OS, allowing a single pool of capital to be used across these market types.

“Exchange OS is designed to address one of the biggest structural limitations in on-chain finance today: fragmented infrastructure,” X Layer wrote in its announcement. The team said it built the platform to offer a shared environment for market infrastructure rather than requiring builders to rely on centralized services or rebuild complex exchange systems.

X Layer described the protocol-level handling of matching and settlement as a way to reduce reliance on off-chain matching engines and separate clearing systems by standardizing key functions within the blockchain layer.

To demonstrate the system in production, X Layer plans to launch the first venue using Exchange OS in June: a simulated 2026 World Cup Outcomes market tied to the FIFA World Cup hosted by Canada, Mexico and the U.S., which begins on June 11. The company said it chose to run an internal venue first before opening the platform more broadly through the XIP-Exchange OS rollout.

X Layer stated the broader rollout will occur in stages after the initial World Cup outcomes test venue, with additional venues and configurations expected to be deployed over time.
