LSE to launch overnight trading venue, running 5pm–7:50am
London Stock Exchange will open a separate overnight venue from 5pm to 7:50am with a 30-minute pause; it will launch in H1 2027 and start with exchange-traded products.
The London Stock Exchange plans a separate overnight trading venue that will operate from 5 p.m. to 7:50 a.m., with a 30-minute pause between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The platform is scheduled to launch in the first half of 2027 and will run independently of the LSE’s main market, which will retain its regular hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
At launch the venue will list exchange-traded products, including funds that track UK and U.S. stock markets. The exchange intends to extend access to more than 2,600 ETPs over time and will consider adding other securities after addressing any regulatory and operational requirements for trading outside the main session.
The site is structured as a separate market so it can operate different hours while keeping the main market timetable unchanged. Trading will pause nightly for 30 minutes to allow end-of-day processing and settlement routines.
Julia Hoggett, chief executive of the LSE, commented that the initiative is aimed largely at meeting retail demand from international investors and increasing institutional interest in interacting with retail order flow. ‘We see demand from retail investors overseas and increased interest from institutions in accessing that flow,' she said.
Simon McQuoid-Mason, head of new product and market structure and equities at the LSE, noted the venue is being built to support automated and programmatic trading. Firms are using AI for portfolio analysis, market assessment, repositioning and execution, and the platform will accommodate those agentic trading capabilities.
Other exchanges and platforms have extended trading hours to offer more continuous access. CME Group has moved some crypto futures and options to round-the-clock trading, and several major stock exchanges have outlined plans or taken steps to broaden hours. Crypto platforms provide uninterrupted trading and offer products tied to traditional markets, including tokenized assets and derivatives.
The LSE will start with ETPs to avoid the added timing and regulatory steps required to trade individual stocks outside normal hours. The exchange expects the overnight venue to be operational in the first half of 2027 and will continue to evaluate further expansion and the associated oversight needs.
