Grayscale: Bitcoin needs other buyers to reach bottom

Grayscale warns Bitcoin needs outside buyers to reach a ‘sustainable bottom’ as it reduces holdings in its Strategy BTC product.

Grayscale warned that Bitcoin will need buying from outside investors to reach a “sustainable bottom” after reducing inventories of its Strategy BTC product. The asset manager said continued reliance on its own sales could remove demand needed to stabilize prices.

The firm described the recent reductions as routine portfolio management. It added that fresh buying from retail, institutional or algorithmic investors would be required for prices to find a lasting floor.

Grayscale framed the dynamics in supply-and-demand terms, stating that when large sellers make up a disproportionate share of market activity, price declines can continue until outside buyers absorb available supply.

Market participants note that heavy selling by large holders increases available supply and can push prices lower, particularly when trading volume is light. Thin order books and lower buy-side interest can widen price swings.

No specific figures were provided for the size or timing of Grayscale’s sales. Observers say the response of other investor types will determine whether Bitcoin stabilizes quickly or continues to drift lower.

Analysts monitor trading volume, spot demand and inflows into custody services and exchange-traded products to assess whether new buying is entering the market. Those indicators are used to track shifts in market participation.

Grayscale used the phrase “other buyers” to express its view that market stability cannot rest solely on the actions of a single large holder. The company is one of the largest managers of crypto investment products, and its holdings and trading activity have affected liquidity in past market cycles.
