Goldman Sachs faces technical strain before Q2 results

Bearish RSI divergence, weakening momentum and failure to reclaim the 20-day moving average precede Goldman Sachs’ Q2 report due before the U.S. session on July 14.

Goldman Sachs shows technical signs of bullish exhaustion ahead of its Q2 results, scheduled before the U.S. session on July 14. The stock rose 19% year-to-date through July 13. Technical signals include a bearish RSI divergence, a sequence of lower RSI highs and repeated failure to trade above the 20-day moving average.

Consensus estimates place second-quarter earnings per share near $14.51 and revenue around $16.22 billion. Investment banking fees and Global Markets revenue are the main expected contributors, including merger and acquisition advisory, IPO underwriting and trading in fixed income, currencies, commodities and equities.

Today's U.S. consumer price index release and testimony by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh to Congress could alter interest-rate expectations and influence trading flows in rates and macro products. Renewed U.S.-Iran tensions and higher oil prices may increase market volatility and client hedging activity across commodities, FX and derivatives.

Technical levels cited by analysts include a medium-term pivot at 1,095.90. A sustained daily close above that level would set up a retest of the June high at 1,125, with further upside targets near 1,171 and 1,197 based on Fibonacci extensions. If the pivot holds as resistance, the stock could slide to the 1,000 to 971.85 area, with major support near 905.75, roughly aligned with the 200-day moving average.

The recent run began at a March 13 low of 780.50 and peaked at 1,125 on June 18. Analysts point to a four-month uptrend that has shown signs of stalling in recent weeks.

Kelvin Wong, a senior market analyst, highlighted the bearish RSI divergence and the repeated failures to reclaim the 20-day average and said the 1,095.90 pivot is a key level for assessing whether a multi-week mean-reversion will follow. Market participants will watch reported fees, trading revenue and any management commentary in the earnings release to assess near-term drivers of stock performance.
