Dutch Bros launches canned energy drinks to enter retail market

Dutch Bros will sell a new line of canned energy drinks at its drive-thru locations and in retail stores, expanding beyond drive-up coffee into the ready-to-drink energy market.

Dutch Bros is introducing a branded line of canned energy drinks that will be sold at its drive-thru locations and through select retail partners. The company said the launch expands its packaged offerings beyond its core coffee menu.

The cans will be available at Dutch Bros stands and in supermarkets, convenience stores and other retail outlets as the company seeks additional revenue outside in-store sales. Packaging will include multiple flavor profiles and formulations, including lower-sugar options.

The initial rollout will start at Dutch Bros locations and with select retail partners, with plans to broaden distribution based on early sales and consumer response. The company plans to use its marketing channels, social media and in-store promotions to encourage trial of the canned products.

Company executives described the launch as part of a broader effort to grow the brand’s footprint and enter the ready-to-drink energy category. Packaged beverages will allow the chain to reach shoppers who want grab-and-go caffeinated drinks without visiting a coffee stand.

Dutch Bros was founded in 1992 in Grants Pass, Oregon, and grew into a regional drive-thru coffee chain before going public in 2021. The company has expanded into multiple states and has built sales on a high-frequency customer base and a menu of traditional and specialty drinks.

Industry analysts note the ready-to-drink energy market is dominated by a few large competitors and requires substantial spending on distribution and advertising to build national awareness. They add that ready-to-drink coffee and energy products tend to have higher margins per unit and offer opportunities for wider retail distribution than a single-concept drive-thru model.

Retail availability, shelf placement and sustained consumer interest will determine how much the canned energy line contributes to Dutch Bros’ overall revenue. Investors and industry watchers will monitor national rollout timelines and early sales as measures of the company’s ability to translate in-store popularity into packaged beverage sales.
