Czech Regulators Move to Block Polymarket Over Unlicensed Gambling

Czech authorities have opened enforcement procedures against Polymarket, alleging the U.S.-based prediction market is offering real-money wagers to Czech residents without a local gambling licence. Regulators concluded the platform's contracts function like bets under Czech law.

Officials have requested that internet service and payment providers limit access to the site and disrupt financial flows tied to the platform while they review compliance with national gambling rules. The authority will examine whether Polymarket met licence, consumer protection and anti-money-laundering obligations.

Possible measures include blocking access for Czech users, imposing administrative fines and asking banks, payment processors and cryptocurrency service providers to stop transactions linked to the platform. The regulator's filings did not list any specific penalties yet.

Polymarket is an online prediction market where users buy positions that pay out if specified events occur. Several regulators treat similar services as gambling because users stake money on future outcomes and operators must hold licences and apply consumer safeguards.

Regulators noted that cross-border platforms using cryptocurrency rails can complicate enforcement. Czech officials say their focus is on consumer protection and ensuring operators meet licensing and oversight rules.
