Crypto losses under $1B in H1 2026 despite record attacks
Crypto hacking losses fell below $1 billion in the first half of 2026 despite a record number of attacks, Immunefi reported.
Immunefi reported that total crypto hacking losses were under $1 billion in the first half of 2026, even as the number of recorded attacks reached a new high. The figures cover January through June 2026 and come from Immunefi’s regular tracking of security incidents in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
The incidents recorded during the period included smart-contract exploits, bridge and protocol vulnerabilities, wallet compromises, private-key exposures and phishing. Immunefi’s data shows more separate incidents occurred in H1 2026, while the aggregate dollar value stolen was lower than in several past reporting periods.
Smaller thefts, recoveries and partial reimbursements contributed to the lower net losses. Many projects expanded formal vulnerability-disclosure channels and paid bug-bounty programs, engaged third-party auditors and activated rapid-response measures, and Immunefi’s report notes those practices coincided with a number of recoveries or limited losses.
Protocol teams, insurers and investors use incident tallies and payout data from trackers like Immunefi when assessing operational security and coverage needs. Crypto theft and exploitation have been recurring issues since the rise of decentralized finance, and industry responses have included growth in paid security research, audits for high-value contracts and insurance products that cover hack-related losses.
Immunefi was founded to connect security researchers with blockchain projects and regularly publishes incident counts and payout data to help market participants monitor attacker activity and defensive responses.
