Coinbase’s Jesse Pollak Hands Base App to Cobie After Bets Fail
Jesse Pollak relinquished leadership of the Base app to Jordan ‘Cobie’ Fish after social and creator-feature experiments failed; Pollak will refocus on Base’s chain infrastructure.
Coinbase executive Jesse Pollak on Wednesday handed leadership of the Base app to Jordan ‘Cobie' Fish after acknowledging several social and creator-focused experiments failed. Pollak said he will concentrate on Base's chain infrastructure while Fish leads app development.
In a post on X, Pollak described the first quarter of 2026 as ‘a punch in the face' and listed failed experiments including Farcaster integrations, Zora-related features, miniapps and creator coins. He wrote that the experiments had ‘disintegrated completely' and caused ‘collateral damage' to the project, adding that ‘this year has been an exercise in eating sh**.'
Jordan Fish, known online as Cobie, joined Coinbase after the company acquired his ICO launchpad Echo last year in a deal worth about $375 million in cash and stock. Fish will take responsibility for the Base app team and app-level product decisions.
Pollak said he will focus on three priorities for the chain: on-chain trading of diverse assets, cross-border stablecoin payments for individuals and enterprises, and AI-native agents that can transact autonomously. He wrote: ‘We're going to build Base into the blockchain for global finance and do everything we can to be the place that the world's money settles over the next century.'
Base launched in 2024 and grew into one of the more active Ethereum Layer 2 networks by transaction volume. Several projects and features promoted for Base did not gain traction: Farcaster was sold, Zora moved development to Solana, and many investors in creator coins on Base are holding assets trading below purchase prices.
Coinbase leadership, including CEO Brian Armstrong, acknowledged that the creator-coin initiative ‘didn't work.' Pollak also cited two mainnet chain stalls in late June that occurred around a scheduled update that introduced new features.
The leadership change at the app level comes amid industry activity that has shifted attention toward tokenized securities and derivatives trading. A recently launched Layer 2 by a major retail trading platform emphasized stock-style and meme-asset trading, a development Pollak referenced when describing the chain's new priorities.
Under the new arrangement, Fish will oversee app products on Base while Pollak concentrates on infrastructure priorities such as settlement rails, trading features and agent-enabled services.
