China Q1 trade: imports surge, exports hold steady

Preliminary early-Q1 customs returns show imports jumped while exports remained largely steady.

The partial figures compare early-Q1 activity with the prior reporting period and show gains in import volumes and values.

Imports increased across raw materials, intermediate goods and some consumer items. Purchases of commodities and components used in manufacturing supply chains also rose.

Export figures held at roughly the same level. Continued shipments of electronics, machinery and other manufactured goods supported outbound trade.

Timing factors such as the Lunar New Year can shift production and shipping schedules between months and may alter quarter-on-quarter comparisons. Full customs figures for the first quarter have not been published.

Market participants and policymakers will review the final customs release for confirmation of these early trends and for detailed sector- and partner-level data. The partial returns cover only early Q1 and do not represent the full quarter.
