Base launches MCP gateway to link AI assistants to wallets

Base released Base MCP, an implementation of the Model Context Protocol, letting AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude connect to Base Accounts to prepare swaps, transfers and app transactions.

Base, the Coinbase-incubated Ethereum scaling layer, released Base MCP on Tuesday. The gateway allows AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor to connect with users' Base Accounts in the Base App.

Base MCP implements the open Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard first formalized by Anthropic. The protocol can be downloaded inside AI clients that support MCP and links AI interfaces with a user's Base Account so agents can prepare transactions locally.

According to the announcement, agents construct transaction calls on the user's device and store them as pending requests that the Base Account later retrieves for user review and signature. Base wrote that the MCP server never has access to users' private keys.

Authentication for Base MCP uses OAuth 2.1, the same standard used by Sign in with Google and the Base App.

At launch Base MCP will connect AI agents to apps on the Base network including Morpho, Bankr, Moonwell, Avantis, Aerodrome, Virtuals and Uniswap. The integrations cover lending, token swaps, perpetuals and new token and agent launches on Base.

Base included a security explanation in the announcement: “Because your agent builds transactions locally — rather than pulling them from a website that could be faked or taken over — the MCP can help mitigate common attack vectors of web-based crypto apps like domain hijacking and phishing and we are excited to invest more in this domain.”

Base noted that developers can integrate Base MCP into AI clients to enable model prompts to generate on-chain actions that users approve inside their Base Account.

The announcement did not include a precise rollout schedule beyond the initial app integrations listed at launch.
