Base sets June 25 for Beryl upgrade and B20 token

Base will activate the Beryl protocol upgrade and add the B20 token standard on mainnet on June 25.

Base, the Ethereum Layer 2 network developed by Coinbase, will deploy the Beryl upgrade and introduce a new B20 token standard on mainnet on June 25. The upgrade and token specification will go live for developers, validators and users that day.

The Beryl release bundles protocol updates with the B20 token specification. The change will affect node software, smart contracts and tooling that interact with the chain. The B20 standard functions as a native token specification for Base and is implemented as part of the protocol-level changes in Beryl.

Developers that issue or interact with tokens on Base will need to update contracts and developer tools to support B20. Node operators and validators must run updated client software to process the new protocol rules. Wallets, bridges and other infrastructure providers may add explicit support for B20 to ensure token operations and metadata are handled correctly.

The June 25 activation follows a testnet period intended to give projects time to prepare changes before mainnet deployment. Base has published technical documentation and developer resources in previous upgrade cycles to help teams adapt applications and coordinate any required contract migrations or interface updates.

Base launched on the OP Stack in 2023 to offer lower-cost, faster transactions than Ethereum mainnet. The network has issued periodic upgrades since launch to refine performance and expand developer features. The B20 token standard creates an additional token option for projects building on Base.
