Sovright launches Argos to recover legacy Zcash funds
Sovright released Argos, a tool to recover ZEC stuck in legacy shielded addresses after ZEC Wallet Lite stopped being maintained in 2022. It requires users’ original seed phrases.
Sovright has released Argos, a wallet tool that restores access to Zcash (ZEC) held in certain legacy shielded addresses that became unusable after maintenance for ZEC Wallet Lite ended in 2022. The tool works for users who still control their original wallet seed phrases and uses those seeds to recover stuck ZEC.
The organization described the affected accounts as particular shielded addresses and declined to confirm the exact number involved. Sovright characterized the total amount held in those addresses as “significant” and noted the issue mainly affected early and long-time Zcash adopters.
Michelle Lai, Sovright's executive chairman, said the team built Argos because they had the necessary skills and that the work would not take an extended period. “To us, it's important that we take care of our users, of people who believe, our community,” Lai added. Sovright framed Argos as a targeted repair for long-overlooked technical problems that frustrate users and erode trust.
Argos is one of several projects the reformed Sovright team has launched. The group recently put a Sovright Mining Pool into testnet to give individual miners an option to reduce Zcash’s concentrated hashrate. Sovright stated that its initiatives focus on addressing user-facing issues and infrastructure concentration.
Sovright is currently a three-person team that moved from Bootstrap, the nonprofit that previously governed Electric Coin Company, the firm that created Zcash. The team includes Lai, Zaki Manian, a blockchain developer, and Christina Garman, who leads product development.
Earlier this year, former Electric Coin Company staff formed a for-profit company called Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL), which is developing Zcash products including the Zodl wallet based on the Zashi codebase. Lai declined to give details about the organizational split, citing legal constraints, and said Sovright has no hard feelings toward the new company.
Sovright advises any user seeking to recover funds to confirm they still control their original seed phrases before using Argos. The organization positioned Argos as a practical option for early adopters whose ZEC became inaccessible after support for ZEC Wallet Lite ended.
