Relai CEO: AI buildout cools bitcoin demand

Relai’s CEO says AI infrastructure investments have drawn capital away from bitcoin, reducing demand, but a significant bitcoin price rally could bring funds back.

Relai’s chief executive said recent investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure has reduced demand for bitcoin, while adding that a strong future rally in the cryptocurrency could reverse that trend.

Loek Essers, chief executive of the bitcoin-focused platform, pointed to a shift in investor attention and capital toward AI projects and data-center capacity. Relai has observed weaker buying activity in bitcoin products and platforms compared with earlier periods of stronger retail and institutional interest.

Essers attributed the pattern to large-scale spending on compute, storage and networking needed for AI systems. He said venture funding, private equity and corporate balance sheets have poured money into AI startups, datacenter expansion and specialized hardware, uses of capital that might otherwise have been directed to digital assets.

The company did not give a precise start date for the trend, but described it as visible over the recent cycle of AI deployments. Relai framed the effect as demand-side pressure on bitcoin markets rather than a structural change to bitcoin’s fundamentals.

Essers noted that if bitcoin posts a meaningful price rise, capital could flow back into the market. He pointed to historical episodes in which rapid price appreciation led to increased retail interest and higher trading volumes, and said that rising valuations can change how institutions allocate assets across risk categories.

Relai also highlighted shifts in where retail users place their attention and the influence of broader macroeconomic conditions on capital flows. The company said investor allocations can rotate between technology sectors as risk and reward calculations change.

Relai provides a service that allows users to buy bitcoin directly. The CEO’s remarks add to ongoing discussion about how competing technology themes, especially large-scale AI deployments, affect capital markets and asset allocation decisions.
