MoonPay launches MoonAgents virtual Mastercard for AI agents

MoonPay’s virtual MoonAgents Mastercard converts stablecoins to fiat at checkout, letting AI agents and users spend from self-custodial wallets at online merchants that accept Mastercard.

MoonPay has introduced the MoonAgents Card, a virtual Mastercard that converts stablecoins to fiat at the point of sale so users and software agents can pay online directly from self-custodial wallets.

The card is issued through Monavate, a regulated global payments platform and principal member of the Mastercard network, under a card issuance agreement that also involves wallet provider Exodus Movement. MoonPay said the product is available now through its command-line interface in the U.K. and Latin America, with launches planned for the U.S. and the European Union in the coming months. Identity verification is required before a card is issued.

MoonPay said Monavate handles onchain funding and authorization in real time, removing the need for users to preload funds or move assets offchain before spending. The company added that wallet custody remains with the user during transactions, approvals can be revoked, and funds are returned to the wallet immediately if a payment is declined.

MoonPay founder and CEO Ivan Soto-Wright described the card as enabling software agents that already manage wallets, execute trades and move value onchain to make merchant payments. Exodus co-founder and CEO JP Richardson emphasized Exodus's role in extending self-custodial infrastructure, saying MoonAgents allows agents to spend directly from onchain wallets and that future wallet and card designs will differ from current consumer products.

Industry leaders have discussed the role of AI agents and crypto in future payments. Binance founder Changpeng Zhao has predicted agents will make many more payments than humans and will use crypto. Coinbase co-founder Brian Armstrong has argued agents may conduct more transactions than people and can hold crypto wallets even when they cannot open bank accounts. Stripe co-founder John Collison has suggested that stablecoins and fast blockchains could enable a large increase in agent-driven commerce.

MoonPay confirmed the MoonAgents Card is a virtual product and can be used at any online merchant that accepts Mastercard. The launch involves coordination between a crypto-native payments provider, a regulated payments processor and a self-custodial wallet firm. MoonPay said the issuance flow was built to preserve onchain custody while enabling real-time merchant payments, connecting self-custodial crypto wallets to mainstream online payment rails.
