Ireland recovers 500 BTC from Clifton Collins’ wallets

Irish Criminal Assets Bureau seized 500 BTC tied to convicted trafficker Clifton Collins, raising recoveries to 1,500 BTC, about $92 million at current prices.

Ireland's Criminal Assets Bureau recovered 500 bitcoin linked to convicted drug trafficker Clifton Collins, bringing the bureau's total recoveries in the case to 1,500 BTC.

The seizure was carried out by CAB with operational support from Europol's European Cybercrime Centre. CAB identified the 500 BTC as proceeds of crime and valued them at nearly $31 million at current market prices. Europol hosted operational meetings in The Hague and supplied “highly complex technical expertise and decryption resources” to assist investigators.

Authorities have now accessed three of the 12 bitcoin wallets tied to Collins, each yielding 500 BTC. Earlier recoveries of 500 BTC took place in March and another 500 BTC in May after access was gained to other wallets.

Law enforcement records say the bitcoin holdings were amassed from proceeds of drug trafficking and cannabis cultivation. Collins bought bitcoin in late 2011 and early 2012 when prices were a few dollars per coin. Investigators report he stored private keys at a rented property in County Galway; the keys were lost after the property was cleared when Collins began a five-year prison term in 2017.

On-chain tracking shows the tagged wallets still contain roughly 4,500 BTC, indicating nine of the original 12 wallets remain inaccessible. At current prices those remaining coins are worth more than $275 million.

CAB and Europol described the operation as requiring specialised technical work to decrypt and access the wallet holdings. The agencies declined to disclose operational details, citing the sensitivity of investigative methods.
