Ethereum OG Wallets Sell After Eight Years, Net $27M

Early Ethereum wallets that acquired Ether near the network’s 2015 launch sold holdings after roughly eight years, turning paper gains into cash returns. On-chain transaction records show these addresses realized about $27 million in profit after their holdings once reached an unrealized peak near $150 million.

The wallets are associated with early participants in the Ethereum ecosystem, including initial investors, miners and contributors who obtained Ether around the network’s launch. These addresses held through multiple market cycles before moving assets into market transactions.

Unrealized peak refers to the highest market valuation of the Ether while it remained in the wallets. Realized profit is the sale proceeds minus the original acquisition cost. The gap between the $150 million unrealized peak and the $27 million realized profit reflects market price changes since the peak and the share of holdings that were actually sold.

On-chain data shows transfers out of the OG addresses and conversion of Ether into other addresses and market liquidity. There are no public statements from the wallet owners explaining the timing or reasons for the disposals.

The reported figures apply to these specific OG wallets and not to the wider set of long-term Ether holders. Ethereum launched in 2015 as a platform for smart contracts and decentralized applications, and some early holders have periodically sold portions of their positions as market conditions changed.

Available records do not indicate whether any remaining balances remain in the original wallets or the exact split between partial and full liquidations for each address.
