EMURGO exits Cardano Pentad to recover SecondFi funds

EMURGO left Cardano’s Pentad governance to focus on reimbursing users after a SecondFi wallet flaw drained about 16 million ADA (≈$2.4M) from 374 wallets.

EMURGO is leaving its role in Cardano's Pentad governance to concentrate on reimbursing users after a flaw in the SecondFi wallet drained about 16 million ADA (roughly $2.4 million) from 374 wallets last month. The company wrote on X on Wednesday: “Our immediate priority is the SecondFi recovery process, and we are concentrating our resources where they are needed most.” SecondFi is a rebrand of the Yoroi self-custody wallet EMURGO released earlier this year.

The exploit targeted an error in SecondFi's address generation system, EMURGO disclosed about two weeks before the departure announcement. EMURGO said it had developed a recovery plan and expected to reimburse lost funds over a two-week period following that disclosure.

Pentad is a coalition formed this year to coordinate network-wide infrastructure and is backed by a 70 million ADA budget for Critical Integrations approved in January. Members include Input Output Global, the Cardano Foundation, Intersect, the Midnight Foundation and EMURGO. It is not clear whether EMURGO received any funding from the Critical Integrations budget.

The decision to step down drew criticism on social media, with users questioning EMURGO's handling of the exploit and whether the organization should retain ties to Pentad's treasury. EMURGO did not immediately respond to requests for comment on funding or on whether its withdrawal from Pentad is permanent.

Users, developers and other Cardano stakeholders are monitoring EMURGO's recovery plan and timeline for reimbursements as the company works to restore funds and address the wallet vulnerability.
